Slim Aarons started his career as a WWII combat photographer where he won a purple heart. After the war, Aarons moved to LA and started photographing celebrities. As Aarons put it, his job was "photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places."
Aaron's photograph of Babe Paley by the pool was shot by him at Babe's cottage, Round Hill, in Jamaica. Babe Paley was one of American society's favorite entertainers. Babe is a wonderful muse for those of us who like to entertain. She was famous for lavish entertaining. She knew how to entertain and did so in the most elegant locales.
Truman Capote was a great friend of Babe Paley's. Here's his glib take on her: “ Babe Paley had only one fault, she was perfect. Otherwise, she was perfect.”
