INSPIRATION AND GIFT IDEAS
"(The hippie aesthetic) was more motivated by an idea that you were going to get away from the whole fashion system. And instead, you were going to express yourself. It's just that everybody happened to be expressing themselves in very different ways." -Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology
As Women's Wear Daily says, The beat goes on.... PEACE SYMBOLS & FASHION
A peace sign necklace is still an important statement for today. In addition to peace which we all pray for, the peace sign necklace symbolizes ecological fashion. | |
The Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute's Andrew Bolton attributes the ushering in of recycleable, reusable clothes to Woodstock : " Ecological fashion was something the hippies very much forefronted," Bolton says.
Women's Wear Daily traces the origin of clothing and jewelry (like peace sign necklaces)as fashion statements and the hippie-chic look to the Summer of Love and 1967 San Francisco, where "Levi's and peasant blouses spilled out of Haight Ashbury boutiques...." But the look was quickly adopted by an East coast culture that "craved freedom from knee length skirts and sheaths." Wherever you live, peace sign necklaces and other peace sign jewelry have universal appeal. A peace sign necklace makes a great one size fits all gift.
By the way, in case you are interested, here's what WIKIPEDIA says about the origin of the peace symbol itself: "The peace symbol is a representation or object that has come to symbolize peace. The dove and the olive branch, or a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak, are ancient symbols of peace; in the latter part of the twentieth century, the peace sign, developed by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and the V hand signal came into use around the world."
