The British & Tea
In her book, The Anglo Files, Sarah Lyall, journalist for the New York Times who married a Brit, says she knew she was becoming used to living in London when she had a terrible day and the world felt like it was falling in on her, but she had a cup of tea and all was right again. Sarah Lyall also expounds on British home appliances. She says she doesn't know why they sell products that don't work. The saran wrap, aka "cling film" doesn't stick, the British made dishwashers are "twice as small, twice as expensive, and four times as slow" as the ones in the United States. However! she says, the electric tea kettles boil water in less than a minute so you can always get a cup of tea!
Lyall also writes that tea in Britain bring us a lot of "status anxiety." As in the USA, Earl Grey and English Breakfast type teaas are considered fancier than "regular" tea like Tetley's. In England, construction workers are known for drinking the latter. Apparently it is quite funny to see big burley guys stopping to line up along a wall and drink tea even if they sometimes put three bags in a cup. At dinner parties, guests often say they'll just have "builder's tea" to mean don't go to any trouble to make me a fancy cup of tea.
The Queen is not so stuffy. She is said to eat cereal put out in Tupperware containers at breakfast. Tupperware is probably not Prince Charles' "cup of tea." The story goes that he was once served tea at The White House with the bag still in the cup and did not know what to do so he just put it down on the table and didn't look at the tea cup again. Perhaps he was served loose tea in teapots by servants all his life, and hadn't a clue what to do with a tea bag.
