Party Goods for Entertaining at Home
All the gurus from Lee Bailey to Martha Stewart talk about making entertaining at home easy. Lee Bailey wrote a whole chapter in his beautiful book Country Weekends called "No-Work Lunches." Martha Stewart writes, "Quick Cook" cookbooks." Using paper party decor is one of the best ways we know to make home entertaining easy and stylish.
Our decorative towels, beverage napkins, paper plates and napkins and plastic glasses are available in many lucious prints and colors. Mix and match the prints and arrange them on one of our fabulous serving trays so they are ready to go. Voila! Your home entertaining will be as easy as the pro's parties. Ideas for Entertaining
I keep a diary where I write down the details of my favorite dinner parties and cocktail parties: those I go to as a guest, those I give, and those I just read about. I love to be the hostess but it's also great fun to go to someone else's house for dinner as a guest and see how they do entertaining at home. I always look for the easy entertaining ideas although I attended am Easter brunch given by a dear friend with hand blown real eggs for placecards which was lovely but not so easy for 20 people. Here are some recipes for entertaining and entertaining ideas from some my favorite muses.
Lady Agnes Jekyll(1860-1937). Agnes Jekyll was to home entertaining what her sister in law Gertrude Jekyll, the famous British landscaper was to gardening. As you can see from the selections on this website, I love serving trays. Here's what Agnes says about trays in her book Kitchen Essays.
"...every house should possess attractive trays in various sizes and jappaned in cheerful colours, leaf green, lemon yellow, sunset red, sea blue. Though light in weight they must be capacious, having a parapidge for safety."
A magazine once called the serving trays we manufacture at Decorative Things "cheerful and chic for your home or the one you are visiting." Agnes is an inspiration.
We use laminated fabric to make our plastic serving trays. They are totally waterproof, lightweight and make great decorative accents for ottoman trays, buffet trays, bed trays lap trays or tv trays. They make the trips back and forth to the kitchen easier and add a dash of pattern to the kitchen, the bar the bedroom or wherever you use them. Our serving trays are useful party decor or everyday decorative accessories.
Martha Stewart
It seems a bit cliched but Martha Stewart is perhaps the best known entertaining muse of the last century.
In her classic book, Entertaining.
Martha says: "I think of entertaining as one friend treating other friends.... an opportunity to be individualistic, to express your own ideas about what constitutes a good party."
Martha's recipes for entertaining are classics. It's fun to do your own thing no matter whose recipes you use. I especially like Martha's Quick Cook recipes.
Eleanor Roosevelt
Another person I admire who believed in easy entertaining at home was Eleanor Roosevelt. On the guided tour of her home in upstate NY, the table is set as it was in Eleanor's day. The glassware is very simple. Apparently, Eleanor liked to use glasses that were easy to wash. AMEN. How right she was! Washing the glasses can be the hardest thing about cleaning up after a dinner party. Our plastic wine glasses would have been right up Eleanor's alley.
Did you know that Eleanor served hot dogs to the King and Queen of England? See more about that in our Keep Calm and Carry On section. The crown on the Keep Calm and Carry On merchandise is that of King George VI who visited Eleanor and Franklin on the eve of WWII. Eleanor was criticized widely for her informal home entertaining but the king and queen loved it.
Fleur Cowles
Stylish Fleur Cowles the famous journalist and editor of Flair Magazine, wrote a beautiful book about flowers that talks about flower arranging and more. Fleur recognized the value of decorative vases. Our selection of glass vases ranges from petite to grand. Pretty and affordable from $25 to $50, they add a lovely touch for a centerpiece or entrance hall.
