Serving Trays for Many Uses

Shagreen, also known as sharkskin, has a wonderful texture. It is used in much fancier decorative accessories than our very accessible trays . Our trays are made of laminated fabric that looks like shagreen so they appear to have texture but they are waterproof, easy care and not nearly as expensive as a real sharkskin or shagreen tray would be. Think of them as user friendly shagreen decorative trays.

Decorative Accessory Ideas Shagreen Our shagreen is a printed cotton but it does a great job of giving the look textured leathery material on our plastic serving trays. The history of real shagreen is quite involved. The material was obtained from various skins but most recently the skin used for the material has been sharkskin. Here is a photo of an antique sharkskin compact. Click here to read more about Shagreen.

Shagreen probably originated in Asia where in ancient times, it was used for sword hilts and other military gear. Later, in the 19th century Western world, it was adopted for decorative accessories like eyeglass cases, utensil boxes, snuff boxes and wig cases. It was very popular in the Art Deco period when it was used for luxury furniture and lamps. In the 1920s, interior decorator and designer Jean Michel Frank (1895-1941) used shagreen for desks, tables chairs and other fantastic furniture that is much coveted today.
