Beach Decorating Fabric:
We got tired of beach decorating fabric with the usual anchors, lighthouses and sailboats and so we found this unusual beach decor fabric that is really a work of art. It's from Northern France. Think Deauville or the cobbled streets of Honfleurs -places akin to American beach locales like Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod or Maine. These beach locales are not quite as sunny as the South of France but the sea is almost always in sight and it's totally unpretentious and beautiful. These beach decorating fabrics reflect that simple attitude.
These fabrics would look wonderful in a place like Nantucket Island. One of the biggest fans of Nantucket was American decorator Billy Baldwin (1903-1984). He had a house on Nantucket. In his autobiography, Baldwin writes about one of his favorite beach houses there and describes how he loved the fact that the owners painted every room in the house one color, splattered the floors throughout and used only three fabrics.
Here's part of Billy Baldwin's own description of the house he loved on Nantucket:
"I thought to myself. This house really ought to be shown to anybody who is going to be a decorator or an architect if only to have them understand the importance of repetition."
"Do not think for one moment," Baldwin continues, "that this house was empty or bare because it wasn't. It was filled with things that were suitable, which went with it, and which seemed to have lived there forever.
I can't imagine anything being brought in, and it seemed to me that the contents of the house must have just grown there. Its comfort was to a degree that was only realized after you had been in it. I have never seen anywhere such an extraordinarily beautiful serene natural achievement in my life. It is something that I shall never forget, and I never got accustomed to it."
