The Anglo Files by Sarah Lyall
INSPIRATION AND GIFT IDEAS
The Anglo Files is a cheeky gift. Put it on your coffee table and use it as a conversation starter. People who have been to London love to read about London, and talk about London. We see a lot of Anglomania in New York now. When Topshop opened in Soho this spring, there were 3 hour lines to get in to see the British retailer's wares. Keep Calm and Carry On items are another example of Anglomania. It's always fun to give a gift that's in vogue.
Here's the first paragraph of the introduction to The Anglo Files, which shows how wired Lyall is in British society:
"Soon after I moved to London I was invited, through some mutual friends, to have lunch with an earl-a real one, as opposed to someone like James Earl Jones or my Uncle Earl back home. I looked it up. Earls, it turns out are better than viscounts, barons, and knights, but worse than marquesses or dukes, who themselves are not so good as monarchs. But in a world of title inflation and cheap celebrity, an earl is still an impressive thing to be."
Lyall still writes for The New York Times. Here's a recent post by Lyall about British Newspapers: SARAH LYALL |
