British Cooking
Agnes Jekyll, the great garden designer Gertrude Jekyll's, sister in law, was renowned in her own right for being a wonderful hostess. Her essays about entertaining and British cooking were originally published anonymously in the London Times but proved so popular that a book followed in 1922. Kitchen Essays is a must read British cookbook for anyone who enjoys home entertaining. Lots of easy entertaining ideas.
"Kitchen Essays" is published by Persephone Press, in London. I recently visited Persephone's charming store. It is in a little alley way off the beaten track. It was a snowy day but warm and comfy inside. There I immersed myself in British cookbooks, British fiction and more. Persephone Books struck me as just the kind of old fashioned, British bookshop experience any book lover would love, British or otherwise. It was really different than the chain store or online experience so prevalent today. If you are in London, a trip to Persephone Books, is a real treat. If not, we hope you will enjoy the British books we selected from them. |
