Decorative Things was founded 22 years ago when we started making ordinary phone books decorative with fabric slipcovers. These days we make lots of ordinary things decorative and our slogan is "We turn ordinary things into decorative things."
We sell upholstery fabric, decorative home decor, home entertaining items like serving trays and other decorative accessories. Our ongoing passion for fabric is obvious in almost every home accent we offer. For example:
-We have a whole section devoted to Upholstery Fabric including a selection of Suzani fabric, Ikat fabric, Williamsburg Fabric, Beatrix Potter-Peter Rabbit Fabric and Shabby Chic fabric.
-In our Kitchen Decor section, we sell kitchen textiles like kitchen towels and kitchen aprons that are made of a handwoven ticking stripe fabric by a fine Italian textile weaver in business since 1842.
-In our Bedroom Decor section, we sell Shabby Chic fabric pillows, Pillows made by fabric designer John Robshaw, and a crisp cotton baby pillow and travel pillow in fabric designed by French fabric designer Manuel Canovas.
-In our Bathroom Decor section, we have Ikat and suzani fabric covered bathroom sets made up of wastebaskets and tissue boxes. And we also sell mirrored wastebaskets and cork wastebaskets and tissue boxes as well as the most fantastic decorative hooks for your bathrobe.
-Even for home entertaining our decorative accessories are inspired by fabric! We have Ikat, Suzani and Trellis patterned serving trays. And our Caspari cocktail napkins and extra long matches are inspired by fabric designs by Manuel Canovas, John Derian and Fortuny.
On our site, you'll find we have many muses like Virgina Woolf, Billy Baldwin, Lady Agnes Jekyll, Charlotte Moss, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, Helena Rubinstein, Audrey Hepburn, Edina Sackville and Fleur Cowles. We carry products from Kenneth Jay Lane and Beatrix Potter.
I am a big believer in MADE IN THE USA products. We make trays, wastebaskets and many other items in the USA. However, what catches the fancy of our customers is not always decorative home decor from our own backyards. For example, our incredibly popular Keep Calm and Carry On products are based on a British World War II propaganda poster.
King George VI’s crown and the “Keep Calm and Carry On” slogan make whatever products the Keep Calm and Carry On graphic is reproduced on like Keep Calm and Carry On posters or Keep Calm and Carry On t-shirts into a decorative thing. As they say, “Britain’s got talent.” I like to think of the Web as a huge version of Britain’s famous Bloomsbury community which existed in the early 1900s not too long before the original Keep Calm and Carry On poster was created. Bloomsbury artists and craftspeople, including Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf's sister, sold merchandise thru what they called "The Omega Workshop." Here’s what one friendly London Times critic said about the Workshop: “…what pleases us most about all the work of these artists is its gaiety. They seem to have worked…because they enjoyed doing so.”
